Dear church,
On October 6, we will welcome David Jacobsen, an attorney who specializes in estate law, to present at the forum. You may be wondering, why did we plan this particular forum? And who is it for?
Earlier this year, the Stewardship Team and the Church Council read Not Your Parent’s Offering Plate. In this book, the author discusses trends in charitable giving and urges churches to catch up with the fundraising strategies of other non-profit organizations. One of the learnings that we gleaned from this book is that we as a church can do more to give people the information they need to support the church (and other organizations they care about) in ways that go beyond their checking accounts.
On October 6th, we will learn more about why estate plans are important and how one goes about creating a plan or changing it. This forum is for those who already have an estate plan set up and for those who are just beginning to learn about it. This forum is for those who are in their 70s and 80s, and it’s for people my age and younger. Why? Because all of us are mortal and none of us know when our last breath will be. An estate plan is an important thing we can put together now, no matter our age.
We are holding this forum because we believe that putting together an estate plan is a faithful act of stewardship. It provides a way to name what matters most to us and to designate our gifts and assets accordingly. It is also a gift we give to our family members who remain after we die. They get to fulfill our wishes, rather than try to figure out what those wishes might have been.
Please plan to come on October 6, and please invite a friend or family member to come with you!
Pr. Sarah
