Dear church,
As we continue to live through this challenging, tumultuous, and ever-changing political landscape, I want to commend to you this video from Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, entitled “Why I am against Christian Nationalism.” Here the leader of our denomination denounces the movement of Christian nationalism, a movement that is hijacking the message of Jesus to try to achieve political power. As Bishop Eaton says in this video, “Christian nationalists seek to legislate that the United States is a Christian nation where Christianity should be privileged and only Christians should hold office. The movement seeks to link religious and political identities, often promoting racist, exclusionary, and divisive ideology. This idea is neither Christian nor patriotic.” Watch this important video here.
While I’m on this theme, I also wanted to share this post that I saw online this week:
Christian nationalism: “Fight!”
Christ: “Blessed are the peacemakers.”
Christian nationalism: “America first!”
Christ: “For God so loved the world.”
Christian nationalism: “Mass deportation!”
Christ: “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”
Christian nationalism: “U.S.”
Christ: “Us.”
In these tense and troubling days, may we hold fast to Christ and the message of love, inclusivity, and justice that he brought into the world.
In Christ,
Pastor Sarah
