Dear Grace community,
On Sunday, my sermon will focus on the last phrase of the Lord’s Prayer – forever and ever, amen. In both the Greek and Aramaic translations of this text, this phrase “forever and ever” means “from generation to generation” or “from age to age.” In other words, this prayer wraps up with a calling to all of us – to live the love of Christ not just for ourselves, but for those who are coming after us. To pass on the faith from age to age. This is where we get our calling to be an actively intergenerational congregation!
This Sunday, we have an opportunity to do this in a very concrete way. We will have outside the sanctuary a bunch of cards already addressed to all the kids at Grace who are headed back to school/college this fall. The invitation is for all of you to take some time on Sunday morning to write a hand-written note to one or several kids in our congregation. We will have Koinonia Hall open after worship – there’s lots of seating in there and we’ll make sure to have plenty of extra pens. We’ll provide some suggested phrases that you can include in your card, but obviously make it your own. And please help us make sure that all the cards are taken and written in so that every kid in our community is included.
Final note of instruction - make sure to turn your cards in before you leave the church building. Please do not take them home with you! We will take care of getting them in the mail so that they arrive close to the first day of school and, hopefully, at the same time as their siblings’ cards. We know what matters! 😊
I’m sending all of these instructions to you this way because I’m hoping to keep this a surprise for the kids in our congregation. I will mention it in worship, but will keep it fairly general.
