Dear church,

One of the things you will hear about this Sunday is “Godly Play.” This is a new offering for kids in our congregation during the post-worship hour, and so I wanted to share a little bit more about it with all of you.

Godly Play is a curriculum that centers the spirituality and wonder of children. It is something I have wanted to bring to a congregation for a long time, and I am thrilled that we’re able to offer it at Grace this fall. The Godly Play curriculum engages what is most exciting about religious education: God inviting us into—and pursuing us in the midst of—Scripture and spiritual experience. It is a creative, imaginative approach to Christian formation and spirituality. I’ve heard it described as a Montessori approach to Sunday School.

Each time Godly Play meets, it will be the same rhythm:

  • Telling a Bible story – an adult leader tells the story by heart, using language and props that help draw kids into the story

  • Wondering – kids get to ask questions, imagine the characters, and wonder where they are in the story

  • Creating – free play/work time – there will be art supplies and creative materials to explore, books and beanbags, also Magnatiles, Lincoln Logs, and Legos.

  • Feasting – sharing a snack

At Grace, Godly Play will meet in the Neighborhood Room (the room next to the Nursery, adjacent to Friendship Hall). This coming Sunday, the room will be open and Leslie will provide an orientation to Godly Play for all interested kids/parents/grandparents at 11:00a (after Kids Choir rehearses). Please join us!

In Christ,

Pastor Sarah
