Prayers of Intercession, 05/08/22

With the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, the world, and all those in need.

Motherhood has been portrayed and celebrated in art for as long as people have been making art. From the Venus of Willendorf fertility figurine carved 30,000 years ago, to the Egyptian goddess Isis nursing her son Horus at her breast, to Michaelangelo’s sculpture of the Pietà, to Dorothea Lange’s depression era photograph The Migrant Mother – these images remind us of the thousands and thousands of generations of women who have come before us. Our ancestral grandmothers strove to make life better for their descendants. Lord, we pray that you would help us keep making life better for mothers and their children for generations to come, a core principle of our society.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We tend to think of motherhood as inherently female. Yet not all people who carry pregnancies and bear children identify as cisgendered women. Yet the love they have for their children is no different. Motherly love is the kind of love which transcends the boundaries of traditional gender roles. We pray, o Lord, that you would open our hearts to understand, appreciate, and embrace families who look a little bit different from our own.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer

Individually we celebrate our birthdays every year, and each December the whole church celebrates the birth of Jesus. The arrival of a new baby is very often a source of great joy and happiness. However, not all pregnancies end with the birth of a healthy baby. Miscarriages are far more common than we acknowledge in our culture. Many women who have experienced miscarriage grieve the loss of a child they never got to meet. Lord, we pray that you would give comfort all those who have suffered miscarriage. We pray that they would be surrounded with support, understanding, and a safe environment to express and process their feelings.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

God of healing, we live in a country where not all people have equal access to healthcare. As a result, maternal mortality is higher in the US than in many other economically developed nations. Rates of maternal mortality are especially high among Black mothers in America, more than double that of white mothers, according to the World Health Organization. Inequality in access to quality pre- and post-natal care contributes significantly to that disparity. Part of building a more just and equitable world requires that we tear down the structural barriers that impede Black mothers from accessing quality care for themselves and their children. Grant us the strength, oh Lord, to keep working for what is right.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Right here in our own community we have people who are need of our prayerful support. We pray especially for: Bodie & family, Gregg, Ted & Dorothy, Valdine, Sean, Chuckie, Terrence, John, Vangie. We offer prayers for our Call Committee, medical personnel, those who are sick, lonely & suffering; Mensajero de Cristo Lutheran Church of Guatemala, and all service personnel and their families.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy and grace. Amen.
