Prayers of Intercession, 01/13/19

Gathered into one by the Spirit, let us pray for the church, the world, and all of God’s creation.

God of new beginnings, we give you thanks for the gift of baptism, and for sending your spirit upon each of us to call and claim us as your own. We ask that you would give us the strength and courage to live up to the work to which this sacrament calls us, centering the good of the community over the good of each of us as individuals. We pray for Veda Linley Malmquist, the newly baptized here in this place, for those who are deciding whether to be baptized, and for those who aren’t sure if they ever were. Help us to be lavish with this sacrament, and to remember that we have belonged to you since before we were born.

God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

God of the lost sheep, we rejoice in the news that Jayme Closs has been found, after her abduction in Wisconsin 3 months ago. We pray for patience in healing from the trauma she has endured. We pray, too, for those who remain lost, especially those who have no one to wonder where they’ve gone. Make us diligent in pursing safety and justice for these, your children, knowing that you have not forgotten them.

God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

God of those caught in the middle, we pray for a swift end to the government shutdown, especially now that more than 800,000 workers have missed a paycheck. We pray, too, for those not included in those numbers, but whose livelihood depends on programs where no one is currently allowed to answer the phone. For farmers about to default on their loans, for children who depend on food stamps in order to eat, for our national parks being destroyed by vandals, we need relief. Help our lawmakers to find swift, creative, sustainable solutions to the impasse where we find ourselves today.

God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

God of compassion, we ask your blessing upon all those who are sick, or grieving, or who find themselves facing difficult situations. We pray this day for Len’s family, Lori’s family, Paula’s family, Pam’s family, Jan, Beth, Brian & family, Stan & Marcella, Carla, Ben, Eileen, Mandy, Kim, Ruth, Roald & Shirley, Dave, Karen, Haley, Dawn, Jackson, Sue, Stephen, Tricia, Melody, Lois, Mensajero de Cristo Lutheran Church of Guatemala, and all service personnel and their families including Kyle, who is currently deployed.

God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Into your hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.
