In Body and Spirit – From our Parish Nurses

Sometimes we all have made what are called “New Years Resolutions.” As this New Year begins, we can also make this same statement. We would also call upon you to have this time to check on your physical health with your health care provider. God calls upon each of us to be good stewards of our own health and well-being. We would urge you to take an active role in your visits to improve your health!

In III John verse 2, we read, “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”

First of all, prepare yourself before your visit. Ahead of time, think through what you would like to discuss. If you have an ongoing complaint try to discover if anyone else in your family suffers from the same condition. A thorough family history helps your provider better understand you as an individual. It’s all right to take notes into the appointment with your questions. Have someone with you if you wish.

Secondly, speak up! Medical providers are trained to evaluate symptoms and decide what is causing them.  If you have personal or family history that worries you, say something, even if what’s on your mind is not a worry. There are many questions that get asked during an appointment.

Third, be honest with your provider. They are not usually mind readers! Don’t hide embarrassing symptoms. Discuss your medications, including any side effects that you may be experiencing.

Listen! Ask for clarification if you need to. Understanding your treatment options and plans, even if it’s a medication change, helps you with your own healing as well! If there are several options given you, ask about the tests or risks with those tests before leaving the office. Most providers will ask if you have any questions before you leave. Check your notes to make sure you have your questions answered.

Primary care visits can be challenging! You sometimes wait to get into your appointment, then the minutes you are there can fly by! You do want to feel that you are fully and confidently participating in the care you receive.

In I Corinthians 6:19-20, we read, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”

We also help you are able to attend our Health Fair, held on Sunday January 14th! Our topic is “Taking Care of Mother Earth.” You will find it most informative!

If you would like to contact the Parish Nurse, please call the church office or email parish.nurse@graceofav.org.
