Christian baptism is one of two sacraments (the other being Holy Communion) in the Lutheran tradition, and exists primarily to proclaim the grace of God that we know in Jesus Christ. In the words and water of baptism, we are declared children of God, members of the church of Jesus Christ. Only by the nurture of the church community does the seed of faith planted in baptism grow into maturity.
Grace offers pastor-led baptism preparation classes for parents of infants and for older children, as well as for adults who have not yet been baptized in the Christian faith. Parents wanting to schedule their first baptism at Grace are offered a baptism preparation class prior to the baptism.
The baptism preparation class consists of a light lunch; an introduction and informational piece from our Children, Youth, and Families staff; teaching from our pastors about the Lutheran understanding of baptism; and helpful tools for the nurture of faith by parents and sponsors, taught by Patty Matthews. We invite and encourage families to also attend the worship service prior to the class.
Child care is available for the class sessions, and parents of newborns often bring their child to the class. Registration for the class and child care reservations are required in advance. Baptisms are held the second Sunday of the month and the following Wednesday.
Baptism brochures are available at the Welcome Center in the church atrium. For further information, to register for the baptism class, and to schedule a baptism, please contact Kathy Kuehne in the church office.
