Grace Bible School (GBS) is our church’s “Sunday school,” which is open to children 3 years of age through 5th grade. As children turn 3 throughout our program year, they are invited to register and join a class. However, because we follow the public school guideline of being 5 on or before September 1 to enter Kindergarten, 3 year olds who join GBS later in the year because of a birthday later than September 1, 2017, will repeat the 3-year-old grade level the following year in order to be in GBS Kindergarten when they enter the public school system.
- Three years old through 4th grade students meet during both the 8:45 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. Sunday services, as well as the 5:45 p.m. Wednesday service.
While our fifth graders are considered GBS students, and in general will follow the same lectionary-based curriculum as the rest of the students, they are grouped together in a Bible study class that delves more deeply into the stories themselves, asking them to read the scriptures individually and in the group setting, and to reflect in small groups on how the stories connect to their day-to-day lives.
- Fifth grade classes meet only during the 10:15 a.m. Sunday service or the 5:45 p.m. Wednesday service.
All GBS students are dismissed from the sanctuary following the children’s sermon, to gather in Friendship Hall for large-group music time. After this large-group session, the children break out into their individual classrooms, organized by grade, for age-appropriate learning and crafts. When the service has concluded, parents may pick up their children from their classrooms.
On both Sundays and Wednesdays the children meet for Grace Bible School for one hour during regular worship times. If the church service runs long, we will keep them in the classrooms until you arrive to pick them up. If the church service runs short, please wait in the atrium until the times listed: Sunday 8:45-9:45 a.m., Sunday 10:15-11:15 a.m., Wednesday 5:45-6:45 p.m.

Families of Fifth Graders,
This fall confirmation will be 6th, 7th and 8th grades, with 6th graders getting a strong foundation of biblical literacy with the Deep Blue curriculum. All 6th, 7th and 8th graders will gather for Confirmation on Wednesday nights, 6:45 p.m.- 8:00 p.m.
For the 2015-16 program year we took the 6th grade students out of the confirmation program, for many reasons, combining them with the Grace Bible School 5th graders, forming EPIC 56 Bible Study. This change was done to increase biblical literacy for the 5th and 6th graders through the Deep Blue curriculum, build relationships, have small-group time mixing the two grades, and to have a few parents involved in this program.
What we didn’t realize with this change were the things we would be sacrificing. This included the 6th graders not feeling connected to the middle-school community at Grace, not being involved in middle-school activities, mission trips, service projects, or fellowship nights, as they had previously. We found 6th graders did not attend GBS as often, thus coming into confirmation without as strong a biblical foundation.
Confirmation registration for 2017-18 has begun; you may register on line, pick up printed forms from the Welcome Center, or print forms from the website. As registration forms come in we will begin forming the new 6th grade small groups; 7th and 8th graders will remain in the same class as the 2016-17 program year. We also ask parents to prayerfully consider serving as a small-group leader.
Let me know if you have any question.

EPIC (Every Person in Christ)
Our fifth graders are grouped together in a Bible study class that delves more deeply into the Bible stories themselves. The children are asked to read the scriptures individually and in a group setting; in the small groups they will reflect on how the stories connect to their day-to-day lives.
Fifth grade classes meet only during the 10:15 a.m. Sunday service OR the 5:45 p.m. Wednesday service (NOT during the Sunday 8:45 a.m. service or during Wednesday confirmation.)
The students attend the church service with their parents and are excused after the children’s sermon. They then head up to the Youth Room for the EPIC Bible study with their instructors and parent volunteers!
Bring Bibles to Grace Bible School
Grace Bible School students in 3rd-6th grades are encouraged to bring their Bibles to class with them each week to use during their lessons. Bibles were presented to all third graders during worship services in September. If you missed it, or you have a 4th or 5th grader who has not yet received a new blue CEB Bible, please contact Paula Ewald or Lois Williams, 952-432-7273 x107, or firstname.lastname@example.org, and we will make sure you get one as a gift from the church.
Fifth Grade First Communion Instruction
Grace Lutheran Church invites all fifth graders to prepare for celebrating Holy Communion in our faith community. Instruction will help you understand the significance and meaning of this important sacrament in the Lutheran church.
All fifth graders participate in First Communion preparation. Parents, please make every effort to have your fifth grader attend Grace Bible School prior to instruction to learn about two stories that play an important role in Holy Communion–the story of the Exodus and The Last Supper. The required instruction session for all fifth graders and their parents is held during Lent. Students celebrate their First Communion at the Maundy Thursday worship service during Holy Week. We encourage families to invite baptismal sponsors to attend the service.
“Do this in remembrance of me.”
Memory Work Program
By the time a child completes elementary school, he/she will have memorized age-appropriate “building blocks” of Lutheran faith such as John 3:16, The Lord’s Prayer, The Apostle’s Creed and The Ten Commandments. The students have five weeks to work with their teachers during class time and with their parents at home, beginning in January. At the end of the program, each grade recites their memory work for the other grades in large-group time.
Thank you to parents and teachers alike for supporting our children in this important aspect of their Christian education!
On occasion, Grace Lutheran Church may use group photographs of children/youth in the monthly newsletter, on the church website, social media or as part of a display in the atrium. Children/youth are not identified by name. If you have concerns about photographs possibly being used in this way, please contact Paula Ewald or Lois Williams at 952-432-7273, ext. 107, or Julie Vagle at 952-432-7273, ext. 105.
